Laughlin worked in clay in the early 1960's selling his work at art fairs and for residential and commercial commission work.  1000's of frogs flew off the shelf.  Madonna was likely from his liturgical phase of sculpture in clay, metal and tapestry.  He designed and created entire sanctuaries and alters for churches, stained glass windows, and celebration banners.   Below is a 30' long copper cornucopia installed in a Michigan shopping center in 1970.
